It’s pretty cruel of me I know, but man I kind of love it when dumb people try to express their pain in a meaningful way. For example, Zakk Wylde and “In This River,” his tribute to his departed friend Dimebag Darrell.

Why do I love this video so much? Because it is really stupid, and silly, and makes an awkward mess of something as deep as grief.

Zakk Wylde is clearly not that bright, if for no other reason than he’s managed to misspell both his first and last name, and “In This River” is a pretty bad song—a soppy piano ballad with Wylde’s awful, fourth-generation-Eddie Vedder-I-am-emoting-so-hard singing. All these metal dudes seem to think when they’re being Sensitive they have to sing like they’ve got a big mouthful of Skoal.

This thing is so goddamn silly! From Lil Dime & Lil Zakk riding their bikes, to the childrens’ hobo camp by the riverside, to the grim reaper dude with the sideways-eyed goat, the entire thing takes itself so seriously despite being almost childishly stupid. The best, most hilarious moment comes about two and a half minutes in, where, after smashing his river piano, Wylde casually—so casually!— tosses a torch onto the remains, which of course ignite instantly, then rips a big hurtful solo out of his double-neck guitar, face turned skyward, long nasty hair hanging down behind him.

Am I just being a dick for thinking this thing is so funny? A man is dead, murdered, his remains mouldering in some box under the earth. A man who meant a lot to a lot of people, and I just laugh at how dumb his dumb friend is for trying to honor his memory in the only idiotic way he knows how.

Do I think it’s so funny because it makes me feel smarter or better than these people? I really suspect that, somewhere, deep down, it does, and that ultimately makes me feel pretty shitty.

A few months ago both my wife’s and my car were stolen, one at gunpoint and the other quietly from our home. It’s been a slow thing to get past, feeling so taken advantage of. But today I found out my car was found several towns away. Driving it back this morning, listening to the thief’s music left in the cd player, with his hat and kickball signup sheets in my trunk, I have a small bit of closure and sense of justice. And a strange urge to know this guy’s story.

Which is a weird thing to say, because this was in August 1994, a few months after Pulp Fiction won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, which means Bart was probably aware of the Gimp when he wrote that “logical extreme” paragraph. Either way: By October, when Pulp opened in the U.S., there was a new zingers-and-gore-peddling enfant terrible in town. The inexact-but-tempting parallel to draw here is that Black was Guns N’ Roses and Tarantino was Nirvana, with French New Wave reference points in place of punk cred. They’re more stylistically alike than that analogy suggests; the difference is that as a writer/director and a shameless attention-hog, Tarantino was able to get out in front of his movies in ways Black never could.
